Getting Started Guide for New Customers
New to buying pallets or working with a pallet supplier for the first time? This step-by-step guide walks you through everything you need to know, from understanding your requirements to placing your first order and setting up an ongoing supply relationship.
Assess Your Needs
Start by identifying your pallet requirements. What products will you palletize? How heavy are they? Where are they going (domestic or export)? What racking system does your warehouse use? Answering these questions determines the right pallet size, grade, and treatment.
Quick Tips:
- • Measure your product footprint
- • Calculate total load weight
- • Check your racking beam spacing
- • Confirm destination country requirements
Choose Size & Grade
Based on your needs assessment, select the appropriate pallet size (GMA 48x40 for most US applications) and grade (Grade A for racking/export, Grade B for general use, Grade C for one-way shipping). Our size guide and grading guide provide detailed comparisons.
Quick Tips:
- • GMA 48x40 fits 90% of US applications
- • Grade B offers best value for most uses
- • Heat treatment required for export
- • Custom sizes available with 5-7 day lead time

Expert Tips from Our Pallet Professionals
Our team has decades of combined experience in the pallet industry. Here are practical, actionable tips that our experts share with customers every day to help them get better value, improve safety, and optimize their pallet operations.
Buying Smarter
Buy recycled for one-way shipping
If pallets are not coming back to you, Grade B or C recycled pallets deliver 40-60% savings over new. Save new/Grade A pallets for racking and customer-facing applications.
Order in full truckloads when possible
A full truckload of GMA 48x40 pallets is approximately 400-500 pallets (depending on stacking). Full truckload rates can be 15-25% cheaper per pallet than partial loads due to freight efficiency.
Lock in pricing with annual contracts
Lumber prices fluctuate 20-40% throughout the year. Annual supply agreements protect you from price spikes and guarantee availability during peak demand periods (typically Q3-Q4).
Storage & Handling
Store pallets off the ground when possible
Ground contact accelerates rot and moisture absorption, especially in the Pacific Northwest climate. Use gravel pads, concrete, or sacrificial base pallets to keep your inventory dry and extend pallet life.
Rotate your pallet stock (FIFO)
First-in, first-out rotation prevents pallets from sitting too long and deteriorating. Outdoor-stored pallets lose 20-30% of their load capacity after 6-12 months of exposure to weather.
Never stack empty pallets more than 15 high
Tall empty pallet stacks are unstable and a significant safety hazard. OSHA recommends maximum 6-foot stacks for hand-stacked pallets. Use banding or containment for larger stacks.
Sustainability & Cost Savings
Set up a pallet return program
If your customers receive goods on pallets, arrange for pallet return or buyback. A closed-loop pallet program can reduce your annual pallet spend by 30-50% and dramatically cut waste.
Repair before replacing
A damaged pallet can often be repaired for 30-50% of the cost of a new one. A single broken board or split stringer does not mean the whole pallet is scrap. Partner with a repair service (like ours) to extend pallet life.
Track your pallet spending
Many companies do not know what they spend on pallets annually. Start tracking pallet purchases, repairs, losses, and disposal costs. This data reveals optimization opportunities that typically save 15-25% within the first year.
Safety & Compliance
Inspect every pallet before racking
A 30-second visual inspection catches broken stringers, split boards, and protruding nails that could cause pallet failure under load. Train your forklift operators to reject damaged pallets before placing them in racking.
Verify ISPM-15 stamps for export
Every wood pallet crossing an international border must have a visible, legible ISPM-15/IPPC stamp. Missing or illegible stamps result in customs holds, fumigation charges, or shipment rejection. Check stamps before loading containers.
Document your pallet specifications
Maintain a written pallet specification for your operation that includes approved sizes, grades, load ratings, and treatment requirements. Share this with your pallet supplier and your warehouse team to ensure consistency.
